What to see in Mexico City: interesting sights of the city

Chapultepec Palace

Bosque de Chapultepec I, Miguel Hidalgo

Chapultepec Palace photo

Former residence of the rulers of Mexico, located on a hill at an altitude of 2325 meters above sea level. The construction of the palace began in 1785, but was later suspended; For several years the building was empty until it was bought by the city authorities of Mexico City and a military academy was placed here. During the American invasion of Mexico in 1846-1848, a fierce battle unfolded near the walls of the palace, in which, in addition to regular army soldiers, cadets aged 13 and over took part. Six of them were recognized as heroes and entered the history of Mexico as “Hero Children”. Near the palace you will see a monument dedicated to their feat: six white-gray columns with niches, where vases with the remains of the dead cadets are stored.

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Plaza de la constitucion

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin photo

The main Mexican Catholic temple. He is considered the largest and oldest in Latin America. The basilica has the shape of a Latin cross, its architecture combines elements of the Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassicism. Once inside the cathedral, you will be stunned by the splendor of the interior: walls, columns and arches are decorated with ivory, gold and mother of pearl. The main shrine is the luxurious Altar of Absolution (made of onyx, gold and emerald), before which services are performed only during major holidays.

Basilica of the Holy Virgin of Guadalupe

Plaza de las Américas 1, Villa de Guadalupe www.basilica.mxv.mx/

Basilica of the Holy Virgin of Guadalupe photo

The Virgin of Guadalupe is called the mother of all Mexicans and the patroness of Mexico. The basilica houses a sacred relic for all Mexican believers - a blue cloak with the miraculous image of the Virgin, with which a beautiful and moving story is associated. According to legend, Maria of Guadalupe appeared several times to the poor peasant Juan Diego and asked her to transmit to the Bishop of Mexico City her request to build a temple on Tepeyac Hill. The bishop did not believe the words of the poor man and demanded evidence of the miraculous appearance of the Virgin. Having learned about this, Maria of Guadalupe ordered the peasant to climb the hill on which, despite the winter time, roses bloomed. Juan gathered the flowers, wrapped them in his cloak and took it to the bishop. When he turned it around, the bishop saw the image of the Virgin on the fabric - the same sign from above that he requested. As a result, a temple was built on the hill, but over time, there were more and more people who wanted to bow to the image of the Virgin, so a larger church was erected nearby (now it is called the Old Basilica), however, he could not accommodate all the pilgrims. Then, to the left of the Old Temple, this new basilica was built, where thousands of believers come annually to worship the wonderful image of Mary of Guadalupe.

Palace of Fine Arts

Avenida Juárez, Centro Histórico www.palacio.bellasartes.gob.mx/

Palace of Fine Arts photo

The palace was built at the beginning of the 20th century according to the project of the Italian architect Adam Boari. Mexican artists: Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and Alfaro Siqueiros worked on the walls of this magnificent palace. Ballet and opera performances are held here (if possible, go to one of the performances), as well as two museums - the National Museum and the Museum of Architecture.

Frida Kahlo House Museum

Londres 247, Del Carmen Coyoacán www.museofridakahlo.org.mx/

Frida Kahlo House Museum photo

The house of the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. It is also called the "blue house" for the deep cornflower-blue color of the facade. Here Kalo was born and lived with her husband Diego Rivera. The museum presents paintings by the artist, her easels, palettes, books and other personal items. The situation in which the family of artists lived remained practically unchanged. An interesting fact: in the period from 1937 to 1939, Leon Trotsky lived here with his wife, until he moved to a house on the next street. Now, by the way, a museum is open there dedicated to his revolutionary activities; there is also the grave of Trotsky.

Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan photo

Translated from the Aztec language, Teotihuacan means "the place where the gods touch the earth." This is an ancient settlement, the history of which is still a mystery. It is known that in the 2nd century A.D. Teotihuacan was a large regional center with a population of more than 200 thousand people. The locals were very religious, as evidenced by the home altars found even in the poorest houses. The city was abandoned in the middle of the VII century for unknown reasons. There are two main hypotheses for the death of Teotihuacan: the capture of the city by foreigners and the revolt of the poor against the nobility. The main attractions are two step pyramids of the Moon and the Sun, the position of which repeats the positions of the three stars of the Orion belt.

Tula

Tula photo

Another ancient city in the vicinity of Mexico City. Here it is worth looking at the pyramid "B", on which the temple of the Morning Star used to stand. Only the ruler and the high priests could visit him. Climbing the pyramid, you will see several five-meter stone statues of Atlantes - presumably, they supported the roof of the destroyed temple. On the north side of the pyramid, a part of the bas-relief with the image of a coyote, a jaguar and an eagle devouring a human heart has been preserved.

Cholula

Cholula photo

Having rented a car, go to Cholulu, where there is an amazing pyramid, which has an interesting history. For several centuries, everyone was convinced that the hill on which the Church of the Blessed Virgin Comforter stands is an ordinary hill with no historical value. However, in 1910, heavy rain exposed some parts of the hill, and it turned out that the unremarkable hill was an ancient pyramid, one of the largest in the world. Archaeologists managed to unearth about 8 kilometers of underground passages that are now open for tourists.

Puebla

Puebla photo

It’s worth to come to Puebla in order to go down the spiral staircase to the mouth of the world's smallest volcano Koshkomat - its depth is only 13 meters. Walking around the city, you will see churches in the style of Mexican Baroque - Churrigeresco, as well as buildings decorated with bright talavera tiles. We advise you to go to the end of Cinco de Mayo and go to the monastery of St. Dominic, located in this area, where you will find the magnificent chapel of the Rosary. Onyx flooring, incredible wood carvings and an abundance of gilding - the pinnacle of the Churrigeresque art.

Atlixo

Atlixo photo

In just an hour and a half, you will drive from Mexico City to the cozy city of Atlixo, which is also called the "city of the best weather in the world." Here you can visit the Convent of San Francisco, where 18th-century frescoes are represented, or the De La Mercedes Temple, which holds a collection of 17th-century paintings. Be sure to go to a local restaurant and order beef roast with a side dish of avocado and cactus fruits - a rare dish that can only be enjoyed in Atlixo.

El moro

Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas 42 www.elmoro.com.mx

El Moro photo

Try the most favorite mexican delicacy - churros - we recommend in the cafe El Moro, which works around the clock (a huge plus to the institution). For those who do not know: churros is a sweet fried dough in the form of long sausages. Churros is best combined with hot chocolate - this is the classic and most delicious combination. There are three types of chocolate in El Moro: sweet, thick and bitter with a hint of vanilla. Dip churros in hot chocolate and you will understand why Mexicans love this dessert so much.

Lampuga

Ometusco 1 www.lampuga.com.mx/

Lampuga photo

Great fish restaurant in the La Condesa area. We advise you to take a table on the terrace and order a salad with tuna and shrimp. Be sure to add a glass of chilled white wine to this to tone up the taste of fresh seafood. If you intend to come to Lampuga on a weekend weekend, it is best to book your seats in advance.

El califa

Altata 22 www.elcalifa.com.mx/web/

El Califa photo

At El Califa, the main course and protagonist is tacos. This place was chosen by locals who certainly know the places where the best tacos are prepared. The portions are small, and this is even for the best: you can order a few cakes with different toppings and sauces and decide on your favorites. Advising something specifically is difficult, as everything is delicious at El Califa. Feel free to choose any dish and enjoy the spicy-spicy flavors of Mexican cuisine.
