Mercedes freshens GL, renames it GLS

Mercedes-Benz’s GL-class full-size SUV will be freshened and renamed as the GLS . The GLS has a redesigned seven-seat interior and a face-lift of the front end in line with other recently restyled Mercedes vehicles.

Performance is improved among the GLS’ high-performance engines. For instance, the top-range AMG GLS63 comes with a 5.5-liter V-6 bi-turbo engine with 577 hp, up 27 hp over the GL class. The GLS500 4MATIC features a direct-injection V-8 bi-turbo engine that generates 455 hp, up 20 hp over its GL-class predecessor.

A 255-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 engine and 329-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 bi-turbo engine are also available. Each model, save for the AMG GLS63, comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Mercedes’ expanded Dynamic Select controller allows drivers to choose up to six transmission modes. They include comfort, slippery, off-road and sport modes. The redesigned interior comes with a new instrument panel with an optional 8-inch media display, a new center console and three-spoke steering wheel.

The GLS will be available to order from November, with global deliveries including Europe and the U.S starting from March.
